Xerox aims to reduce cost of colour printing

Office supplies manufacturer Xerox has confirmed it is attempting to drive down the cost of printing documents in colour.

The company this week unveiled a new printer which uses a large crayon-like device instead of traditional ink or toner cartridges.

According to the firm, this will reduce the overall cost of printing in colour, as charges will be based on how much colour a certain document requires. Ursula Burns, president of Xerox, said this could lead to the cost of colour printing dropping by nearly two-thirds.

"The world is in colour," she commented. "That's what our customers want." Ms Burns added that making colour printing jobs more affordable for big offices was a "fundamental barrier" that it has tried to break.

The comments come after Xerox chairman Anne Mulcahy reaffirmed the company's commitment to rolling out affordable office products during the global economic downturn.
